Communication with relatives and friends

One in five people aged 16 or older indicated contacting relatives (not living together) by phone, post, Internet on a daily basis. Almost two thirds (64.1 per cent) of the population aged 16 or older communicated with relatives at a distance at least once a week. 27.6 per cent of persons indicated getting together with relatives (not living together) at least once a week. Young people meet with their relatives slightly less often than older people.

59.8 per cent of people aged 16 or older communicated with friends at least once a week at a distance (by phone, Internet, post), 29.2 per cent – met in person. One in three (30.2 per cent) persons aged 16–24 communicated with friends in person every day, two thirds (64.5 per cent) – communicated at a distance. With age, communication with friends becomes rarer, the number of friends decreases. 15.4 per cent of persons aged 65 or older have indicated that they never meet with friends or have no friends at all, while one in four (25.7 per cent) – meet less often than once a month. Live meetings with friends were partly compensated by communication by telephone or Internet: 43.9 per cent of persons of retirement age communicated with friends at a distance at least once a week, and of them, one in five – on a daily basis.
