In 2021, household disposable income totalled, on average, EUR 1,464 per month, while household disposable income per capita – EUR 697 per month. Compared to 2020, disposable income increased by 11.1 per cent. In the major cities, disposable income of a household was by 35.7 per cent larger than in other towns and by 19.6 per cent larger than in rural areas. In order to compare income of households of different size and composition, the equivalised disposable income is calculated (the equivalised disposable income is calculated using the modified OECD equivalence scale), which in 2021 totalled EUR 1,001 per month. The largest equivalised disposable income were recorded in households composed of lone parent with at least one child aged less than 25 (EUR 1,151) and in those composed of couple without children (EUR 1,132), while the smallest – in households composed of lone parent with at least one child aged less than 25and in those composed of a single person (EUR 741 and EUR 781 respectively).

In 2021, income from paid employment was indicated as the main source of income by 58 per cent of households. The equivalised disposable income of these households exceeded the average income by 10 per cent. Old‑age pension was indicated as the main source of income by 27 per cent of households; their income per equivalent adult made up 55 per cent of the average income. Other social transfers were indicated as the main source of income by 7 per cent of households; their income per equivalent adult made up 41 per cent of the average income.

In 2021, disposable income in cash per household averaged EUR 1,449 per month, equivalised disposable income in cash – EUR 991 per month. Compared to 2020, disposable income in cash per household increased by 11 per cent.

Disposable income in kind was significant in rural households only, where it accounted for 1.6 per cent of the total disposable income (in urban households, 0.8 per cent only). In terms of calculation of the inequality of income and at-risk-of-poverty indicators, disposable income in kind is not taken into account.
