In 2020, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises (non-financial enterprises, except natural persons carrying out economic activity) (SMEs) increased by 0.6 per cent. Very small enterprises (0–9 person employed) accounted for the largest proportion β€“ 83 per cent. Small (10–49 persons employed) and medium-sized (50–249 person employed) enterprises accounted for 14 and 2.8 per cent respectively. Over the year, the number of persons employed in SMEs increased by 1.8 per cent.

Against 2019, the turnover of SMEs decreased by 0.9 per cent and totalled almost EUR 64.2 billion. Turnover of small, medium-sized and very small enterprises made up 37, 36 and 27 per cent respectively.

SMEs earned EUR 3.9 billion net profit, i.e. almost by EUR 0.6 billion (or 17.1 per cent) more than a year ago. Net profitability of such enterprises accounted for 6.1 per cent (in 2019, 5.2 per cent). Very small enterprises were the most profitable ones β€“ their profitability accounted for 8.5 per cent.

In 2020, exports of goods of SMEs amounted to EUR 11.8 billion and, against 2019, increased by 3.6 per cent.
