In 2020, the turnover (VAT excluded) of retail and wholesale trade enterprises increased, that of wholesale and reatail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles and of food and beverage service enterprises decreased.

In 2020, against the previous year, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 2.8 per cent, and against 2015, by 28.7 per cent at constant prices. The turnover of retail trade enterprises trading in food products, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, against 2019, increased by 2.7 per cent, and against 2015, by 11.5 per cent. In 2020, against 2019, the turnover of enterprises trading in non-food products increased by 6.6 per cent, against 2015, by 39.4 per cent at constant prices.

Against 2019, the turnover of enterprises engaged in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 10.5, against 2015, increased by 58.1 per cent at constant prices.

In 2020, against 2019, the turnover of food and beverage service enterprises decreased by 25.9, against 2015, by 6.4 per cent at constant prices.

In 2020, the turnover of wholesale enterprises, against the previous year, increased by 7.1, against 2015, by 33.6 per cent at constant prices.

In 2020, according to the final data obtained from customs declarations and Intrastat reporting data, exports from Lithuania amounted to EUR 28.69 billion in terms of commodity value, imports to Lithuania – EUR 29.15 billion. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin amounted to EUR 17 billion. The foreign trade deficit of Lithuania amounted to EUR 0.46 billion.

In 2020, against 2019, exports decreased by 3.2, imports – 8.7 per cent.

In 2020, the largest share in Lithuania’s exports fell within machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (15.5 per cent), products of the chemical and allied industries (13.7 per cent), as well as prepared foodstuffs, beverages and spirits, tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (9.1 per cent). The largest share in Lithuania’s imports fell within machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (19.8 per cent), products of the chemical and allied industries (13.1 per cent ), mineral products (12.1 per cent). As for the goods of Lithuanian origin, the largest share in exports fell within miscellaneous manufactured articles (12.7 per cent), prepared foodstuffs, beverages and spirits, tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (11.4 per cent), products of the chemical and allied industries (11.4 per cent), petroleum products (9 per cent).

In 2020, the most important Lithuania’s partners in exports were Russia (13.4 per cent), Latvia (9.2 per cent), Germany (8.1 per cent), and Poland (6.4 per cent), while in imports – Poland (13 per cent), Germany (12.9 per cent), Russia (8.8 per cent), Latvia (7.8 per cent). Most of the goods of Lithuanian origin were exported to Germany (10.2 per cent), Sweden (6.9 per cent), Latvia (6.8 per cent), Poland (6.8 per cent) and the United States (6.6 per cent).

The biggest proportion of goods was exported to the EU member states – 56 per cent of total exports from Lithuania. The biggest proportion of imports was also from the EU member states – 70.7 per cent of total imports to Lithuania.

Statistical information on the past, present or future changes in the economic activities of retail trade enterprises, retail trade confidence indicator that characterizes changes and tendencies of trade activity has been prepared by applying data of the statistical survey of trade enterprises, also known as business opinion survey. Statistical survey is intended for short-term economic analysis and forecast, i.e. to foresee economic activity relations and growth periods, to establish present economic state in the country and trend of business activity changes. More specifically, such data are increasingly used in predicting turning points in the economic cycle.
