As of 31 December 2020, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Lithuania totalled EUR 23.9 billion and, against the respective period of 2019, increased by 15.7 per cent, in the Capital Region – increased by 21.1, in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – 1.5 per cent.
The Capital Region attracted 75.7 per cent of the total FDI (Vilnius city municipality – 96 per cent of the total FDI in the region), the Central and Western Lithuania Region – 24.3 per cent (Kaunas and Klaipėda city municipalities – 22.9 and 22.6 per cent respectively).
Compared to the end of 2019, the largest growth in FDI was recorded in Vilnius (21.1 per cent), Alytus (13 per cent) and Panevėžys (12.4 per cent) counties, while drop – in Marijampolė (15.6 per cent) county.
FDI per capita increased by 15.6 per cent and averaged EUR 8.6 thousand. FDI per capita in the Capital Region amounted to EUR 21.8 thousand, in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – EUR 3 thousand.

The largest investment in the Capital Region was made by German (27 per cent of the total FDI), Swedish (18.3 per cent), Estonian (14.5 per cent) and Dutch (7.7 per cent) investors, while in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – Duch (10.9 per cent), Danish (10.6 per cent) and German (10.5 per cent) investors.

In the Capital Region, the bulk of investment fell within financial and insurance activities (EUR 9.3 billion), wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycle (EUR 1.8 billion), real estate activities (EUR 1.7 billion), as well as information and communication (EUR 1.7 billion) enterprises, while in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – manufacturing (EUR 2.5 billion), real estate activities (EUR 787.6 million), and wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycle (EUR 560.1 million).
