Ecosystems
In 2021–2024, the State Data Agency has been implementing two EU-funded projects on natural ecosystems in Lithuania:
-
“Pilot ecosystem extent and forest condition accounts”
-
“Compilation of ecosystem condition indicators according to the proposal for amending Regulation (EU) 691/2011”
Ecosystem accounting is a spatially-based, integrated statistical framework for organizing biophysical information about ecosystems, measuring ecosystem services, tracking changes in ecosystem extent and condition, valuing ecosystem services and assets, and linking this information to measure economic and human activity.
Following the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), an ecosystem is a dynamic complex of plant, animal and micro-organism communities and their non-living environment interacting as a functional unit.
Ecosystem condition is the quality of an ecosystem measured in terms of abiotic and biotic characteristics. Condition is assessed in terms of ecosystem structure, function and composition that maintain the ecological integrity of the ecosystem and support its ability to provide ecosystem services. Ecosystem condition assessment indicators can be multifaceted and are evaluated on time and space scales.
