The chapter presents statistical information on international and national carriage by all modes of transport and road traffic accidents, as well as data on passenger arrivals and departures, freight loaded and unloaded in seaports and airports. Data of the Register of Road Vehicles of the Republic of Lithuania, the Register of Seagoing Ships of the Republic of Lithuania are provided. 

 

 

 


In 2022, transport of goods by all modes of transport (including trans­por­tation by oil pipelines) amounted to 149 million tonnes, which is by 20.8 per cent more than in 2013 and by 18.9 per cent less than in 2021. In 2013–2022, an average annual increase of 2.1 per cent was observed. In 2022, compared to 2021, freight carriage by inland waterway transport increased by 12.3 per cent. Meanwhile, transportation by air dropped by 7.1, by rail transport – 39.4, by sea transport – 23.2, by road transport – 10.9, by oilpipelines – 0.9 per cent.

In 2022, compared to 2021, international freight transport decreased by 20.6 per cent. A decrease was observed for international freight transport by air (67.1 per cent), by rail (53.1 per cent), by sea (23.2 per cent), by road (5.1 per cent), and by oil pipelines (0.9 per cent).

In 2022, compared to 2021, national freight transport decreased by 15.5 per cent. Road transport remained predominant and accounted for 70.6 per cent of total national transport.

 

In 2022, 44.5 million tonnes of goods were handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal, which is by 5.1 per cent more than in 2013 and by 16.8 per cent less than in 2021. In 2013–2022, an average annual increase of 0.6 per cent was observed.

In 2022, crude petroleum and petroleum products accounted for 29.5 per cent (13.1 million tonnes) of all goods handled. Compared to 2021, their amount increased by 7.7 per cent. Natural and chemi­cal fertilisers handled accoun­ted for 7.9 per cent (3.5 mil­lion tonnes) of all goods handled; com­pared to 2021, their volume decreased by 76.1 per cent. Goods in containers, goods road vehicles and wagons handled accounted for 25.9 per cent (11.5 million tonnes) of all goods handled; compared to 2021, their volume increased by 8.8 per cent.

In 2022, freight and mail loaded and unloaded at Lithuanian airports amounted to 20.7 thousand tonnes, which is by 30.8 per cent more than in 2013 and by 4 per cent more than in 2021.

 

 

 


In 2022, the number of passengers carried by all modes of transport amounted to 308.8 million, which is by 24.9 per cent less than in 2013 and by 47.9 per cent more than in 2021. In 2013–2022, an average annual decrease of 2.4 per cent was observed. In 2022, compared to 2021, passenger transport by air grew by 56.4, by road – 49, by rail – 13.4, by inland waterways – 12.2, and by sea – 8.9 per cent.

In 2022, national passenger transport by road predo­mi­nated: it accounted for 97.6 per cent of total national passenger transport. Passenger transport by rail accounted for 1.5 per cent, by inland waterways – 0.9 per cent.

International passenger transport by air made up 39.1, by road – 35.5, by sea – 13.9, by rail – 11.5 per cent of total interna­tional pas­sen­ger transport.

In 2022, the total number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the country’s airports amounted to 5.3 million, which is by 53.2 per cent more than in 2013 and 2.2 times more than in 2021. In 2013–2022, an average annual decrease of 4.9 per cent was observed.

The majority of passengers arrived from and de­parted to the United Kingdom (17.9 per cent), Turkey (9.7 per cent), Germany (7.9 per cent), Norway (7.2 per cent), Denmark (6.5 per cent), and Italy (5.2 per cent). In 2022, compared to 2021, more passengers arrived from and departed to the United Kingdom – 2.7 times, Denmark – 2.5 times, Norway – 2.3 times, Italy – 2.1 times, Turkey – 2 times, Ger­many – by 86.5 per cent.

2,861 road traffic accidents took place in 2022. The total number of persons killed amounted to 122 (by 17.0 per cent less than in 2021), that of persons injured – to 3,349 (by 5.2 per cent more than in 2021). In 2022, compared to 2021, the number of persons killed in road traffic accidents through the fault of per­sons under the influence of alcohol decreased by 10.9 per cent, the number of persons injured in such accidents decreased by 6.8 per cent.
