The chapter presents the number of households in Lithuania and the number of the members of a statistical household based on the Labour Force Survey. The results of the Income and Living Conditions Survey show how the residents of Lithuania live and how many of them face material deprivation.

Based on the results of the Labour Force Survey, in 2022, there were 1 million 471.1 thousand households in Lithuania. The average household comprised 1.92 persons.

Households comprised of a single person accounted for 45 per cent of the total number of households. Families with children accounted for 27 per cent, of them – one in four (25 per cent) consisted of one adult with dependent children.

The results of the Survey on Income and Living Conditions showed that in 2022 material and social deprivation was faced by 12.7 per cent of the population, of whom 6 per cent were facing severe material and social deprivation. Compared to 2021, the material and social deprivation rate decreased by 0.9 percentage points: in urban areas – by 0.2, in rural areas – 2.5 percentage points. During the period in question, the severe material and social deprivation rate in the country decreased by 0.4 percentage points: in urban areas, it remained unchanged, in rural areas – decreased by 1.2 percentage points.

24.6 per cent of the population were living at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2022 (in 2021, 23.5 per cent). Persons at risk of poverty or social exclusion are those who meet at least one of the following conditions: living at risk of poverty, facing severe material and social deprivation or living in households with very low work intensity. 72 per cent of persons living at risk of poverty or social exclusion fall into this category according to one of the three criteria, while one in fifteen (1.6 per cent of total population) – according to all three criteria.

In 2022, persons living at risk of poverty or social exclusion in urban areas accounted for 22.8, in rural areas – 28.4 per cent, which is by, respectively, 1.8 percentage points more and 0.5 percentage points less than in 2021.
