The chapter presents statistical information on the number of criminal offences recorded in the country, convicted and imprisoned persons. Statistical data are provided by the Information Technology and Communications Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, the National Courts Administration, the Lithuanian Prison Service, and the Police Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania.

 

 

 

In 2022, the number of criminal offences recorded increased by 7.5 per cent and totalled 45.7 thousand. Crimes accounted for 89.1 per cent of all the criminal offences recorded. In 2022, 6.2 per cent of crimes were serious and grave crimes. In 2022, 2.5 thousand serious and grave crimes were recorded, which is by 1 per cent less than in 2021.

In 2022, courts convicted 15 thousand persons, which is by 50 (0.3 per cent) less than in 2021. In 2022, there were 533 sentenced persons per 100 thousand population (in 2021, 534).

At the end of 2022, there were 5 thousand persons in imprisonment institutions (in 2021, 5 thousand); most of them – 4.4 thousand (88.8 per cent) – were those incarcerated and serving punishment, others (0.6 thousand, or 11.2 per cent) – pre-trial detainees. In 2022, there were 177 incarcerated persons in imprisonment institutions per 100 thousand population (in 2021, 181).
