Statistical information on the stock of dwellings is based on the data of the database of the Real Property Cadastre and Register of the state enterprise Centre of Registers. Records on the stock of dwel­lings are provided by form of ownership and location.

Stock of dwellings refers to living quarters (dwellings) in residential and non-residential buildings, including summerhouses and cottages, as of 31 December of the reporting year. The stock of dwellings does not include hostels, hotels, hunters’ cottages, rest establishments, sanatoriums and other structures meant for temporary lodging.


On 31 December 2018, the stock of dwellings amounted to 99.2 million m² of useful floor area (60.3 million m² – in ur­ban areas, 38.9 million m² – in rural areas). Private property accounted for 98.6 per cent of the total stock of dwellings; the rest belonged to the state and municipalities.

Useful floor area in individual houses (1−2 dwelling buildings) amounted to 54.7 million m², or 55 per cent of the total stock of dwellings. Useful floor area in blocks of flats amounted to 44.5 million m², or 45 per cent of the total stock of dwellings.

The average useful floor area per capita amounted to 35.5 m²: in urban areas – 32.2, in rural areas – 42.2 m².

The stock of dwellings in the country was comprised of 1 million 451.5 thousand dwellings, i.e. average 519 dwell­ings per 1 000 population. Most of them were two- and three-room dwellings: in urban areas – 37.8 and 25.1, in rural areas – 24.6 and 30.4 per cent respectively. The average size of a dwelling was 68.4 m²: in urban areas – 62.2, in rural areas – 80.7 m².

The average size of a private dwelling was 68.8 m²: in urban areas – 62.7, in rural areas – 81 m². The state and municipalities dwellings were smaller: the average size of a public dwelling was 48 m² (in urban areas – 44.5, in rural areas – 59.1 m²).
