In 2017, healthcare expenditure in the country totalled EUR 2.7 billion, or 6.4 per cent of gross domestic product. Compared to 2016, it increased by 5.5 per cent.
In recent years, changes in the number of healthcare personnel were marginal. At the end of 2018, there were 46 practicing physicians, 10 practicing dentists, and 81 practicing nurses (incl. midwives) per 10 000 population. The number of hospital beds (except for those for nursing) decreased: there were 65 hospital beds per 10 000 population.
In recent years, the number of hospital discharges was on the decrease. In 2018, there were 623 thousand hospital discharges (including healthy newborns; excluding day cases, nursing inpatients, and inpatient rehabilitation cases in sanatoriums), which is by 25 thousand (3.9 per cent) less than in 2017. There were 222 hospital discharges per 1 000 population. In 2018, the average length of stay in hospital was 7.6 days. In 2018, the number of hospital day cases was still relatively low: 61.1 thousand, or 21.8 per 1 000 population.
In 2018, the number of persons who lost capacity for work due to accidents at work totalled 4.4 thousand, which is by 4 per cent more than in 2017. The number of deaths due to accidents at work totalled 37 (in 2017, 37).
In 2018, 11.2 thousand persons of working age were for the first time established a reduced level of capacity for work. Compared to 2017, this figure decreased by 3.1 per cent; there were 7 such persons per 1 000 working-age population.
In 2018, 1 863 children under 18 were for the first time recognised as disabled (in 2017, 1 915).
