By the Law on Education of the Republic of Lithuania, the participation in primary and lower secondary education for children until the age of 16 is compulsory and State-guaranteed.

The educational attainment of the population is defined based on the classification of education, approved by Order No V-988 of 23 June 2010 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania.

In the 2018–2019 academic year, the number of students in formal education of Lithuania amounted to 468 thousand, or nearly every sixth resident of Lithuania.

At the end of 2018, there were 731 preschool establishments operating in the country (of which 632 – in urban, 99 – in rural areas); 517 general schools had preschool education groups integrated. In 2018, compared to 2017, the number of general schools decreased from 1 125 to 1 089, that of students in them – from 326 thousand to 322 thousand.

In 2018, upper secondary education in general schools was received by 23 thousand school graduates. 4.5 thousand students of vocational education institutions, in addition to a school-leaving certificate, acquired a profession.

In the 2018–2019 academic year, there were 73 vocational education institutions, with 34 thousand students in them. In 2018, there were 15 thousand graduates from such institutions.

Professionals with the highest qualification were prepared by 42 higher education institutions – 20 universities and 22 colleges (of which 7 universities and 10 colleges – private). At the beginning of the 2018–2019 academic year, there were 111.3 thousand students in those schools, of whom 77.3 thousand – in universities, 34 thousand – in colleges. In 2018, compared to 2017, the number of students in schools of higher education decreased by 6.5 thousand, or 6 per cent.
