In 2017, the amount of freshwater consumed for various purposes amounted to 2.7 billion m³ (in 2014, 3.1 billion m³). The largest amount of the water (90.2 per cent) was consumed for energy needs. Although a decrease in consumption of freshwater was observed, yet surface water is still heavily polluted: in 2017, the amount of polluted (untreated) wastewater amounted to 48.1 thousand m³.

One of the main causes of climate change is the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Lithuania is one of the first EU countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the data of Eurostat, from 1990 to 2017, greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere in Lithuania decreased more than two times – from 48.2 thousand to 20.2 thousand tonnes.

In 2018, the amount of pollutants emitted to the atmosphere from stationary pollution sources amounted to 65.9 thousand tonnes: carbon monoxide – 25.5 thousand tonnes, sulphur dioxide – 11 thousand tonnes, volatile organic compounds – 13.9 thousand tonnes. In 2014, the amount of pollutants emitted amounted to 56.5 thousand tonnes: carbon monoxide – 16.8 thousand tonnes, sulphur dioxide – 11 thousand tonnes, volatile organic compounds – 10.5 thousand tonnes.

In 2018, the largest amount of pollutants emitted to the atmosphere from stationary pollution sources was recorded in Mažeikiai district (22 585 tonnes), Vilnius city (6 899 tonnes), Kaunas city (5 370 tonnes), Akmenė (4 270 tonnes) and Klaipėda city (3 378 tonnes) municipalities.

In 2014, the highest pollution was in Mažeikiai district (20 099 tonnes), Kaunas city (3 791 tonnes), Jonava (3 233 tonnes) and Akmenė (3 291 tonnes) municipalities.

In 2017, municipal waste amounted to 455 kg per capita, or by 22 kg more than in 2014 (433 kg); the EU average – 475 kg per capita. In 2017, the largest amount of municipal waste generated was recorded for Denmark (781 kg), the smallest – Romania (272 kg).
