The chapter presents information on culture, the press and sport provided by the Ministry of Culture, Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, Lithuanian National Culture Center, Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania, De­part­ment of Phy­­si­­­­cal Education and Sports under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, and Statistics Lithuania. Data on public libraries, museums, theatres, cine­mas, cultural centres, public archives, the press, radio and TV broadcasters, sports organisations are provided.


In 2018, there were 2 402 libraries, 654 cultural centres and branches, 104 museums, 50 theatres, and 26 cine­mas operating in the country.

Libraries

In 2018, there were 1 million 162 thousand registered library users, or 42 per cent of population. Compared to 2017, the number of registered library users decreased by 44 thousand. Over the year, one user would visit a library, on average, 18.5 times.

In 2018, library stocks comprised 51.5 million copies of documents.

Cultural centres

In 2018, there were 654 cul­tu­ral centres in the country with 3.8 thou­sand amateur art groups operating therein. In 2018, 56.1 thousand concerts and other cultural events were held by amateur art groups (in 2017, 52.4 thousand).

Museums

Over the year, the number of museum visitors increased from 4.2 to 5 million. There were 48 thou­sand visitors per museum. The highest number of visitors was received by the Lithuanian Sea Museum (793 thousand), National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (430 thousand), Trakai History Museum (394 thousand), Lithuanian Art Museum (353 thousand), and Lithuanian National Museum (223 thousand).

Theatres and concert agencies

In 2018, there were 13 public and 37 private theatres in the country, which gave 6.7 thousand performances, i.e., on average, 135 performances per theatre. Over the year, the number of theatregoers increased from 1.40 to 1.35 million.

In 2018, 7 concert agencies arranged 845 con­certs. The number of visitors totalled 481 thousand. 

In 2018, the annual volume of original radio programmes by the Lithuanian national radio and television broadcaster totalled 27.9 thousand hours, original television programmes – 31.8 thousand hours. The annual volume of original programmes by private radio broadcasters totalled 220.9 thousand hours, original television programmes – 194.3 thousand hours.

Cinemas

In 2018, Lithuanian cinemas received 4.3 million cinemagoers, which is by 159 thousand more than in 2017. There were 26 cinemas operating in the country, with the total of 82 cinema halls. There were, on average, 1.4 thousand showings per cinema hall. In total, there were 17.5 thousand seats in cinemas. Over the year, one cinemagoer would visit a cinema, on average, 1.5 times.

   The press

In 2018, 3 075 titles of books were released; their annual circulation totalled 4.7 million copies. Moreover, 527 different magazines and 188 newspapers were released. Compared to 2017, the annual circulation of newspapers and magazines decreased by 6 and 7.9 per cent respectively.

   Sport

In 2018, there were 113 national sports organisations in the country. There were 141.8 thousand sportspeople doing Olympic and non‑Olympic, aviation, technical sports, including the disabled, or 5.1 per cent of the total population of the country. In 2018, the most popular sports were football, basketball, swimming, track and field, volleyball, handball, and table tennis (52.4 per cent of all sportspeople doing sports). In European and world championships, Lithuanian adult and junior sportspeople doing Olympic sports won 25 medals.
