The decline in the resident population in 2018 was caused by negative net international migration and the natural decrease. The impact of negative natural population change accounted for 77.6 per cent of the total decline.

At the beginning of 2019, 1 million 875.4 thousand (67.1 per cent) residents were living in urban areas, 918.8 thousand (32.9 per cent) – in rural areas. At the beginning of 2019, there were 552.4 thousand elderly people (aged 65 and older), or 19.8 per cent of the total resident population. Each seventh man and each fourth woman was aged 65 and older. Compared to the beginning of 2018, the number of elderly people increased by 0.6 thousand, or 0.1 per cent.

At the beginning of 2019, the number of children under 15 was 1.3 times lower than that of elderly people. There were 131 elderly persons per 100 children.

At the beginning of 2019, the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania accounted for 98.3 per cent of the country’s resident population, those of Ukraine – 0.5 per cent, Russia – 0.4 per cent, Belarus – 0.3 per cent (at the beginning of 2018, for 99, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.1 per cent respectively). Most residents of the country (2 million 656 thousand, or 95 per cent) were born in Lithuania, 138.2 thousand (5 per cent) – abroad.

At the beginning of 2019, 1 million 157.9 thousand (50.5 per cent) persons aged 18 and older were married, 10.5 per cent – divorced, each eleventh – widowed. The number of divorced women was 1.8 times, that of widowed women – 7 times higher than that of men.
