The main source of statistical information on births, deaths, marriages, divorces, international and internal migration is data of the Population Register of the Republic of Lithuania.
Resident population
At the beginning of 2019, the estimated resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.2 thousand persons, which is by 14.7 thousand (0.5 per cent) less than at the beginning of 2018. The decline in the resident population in 2018 was caused by negative net international migration and the natural decrease. The impact of negative natural population change accounted for 77.6 per cent of the total decline.
At the beginning of 2019, 1 million 875.4 thousand (67.1 per cent) residents were living in urban areas, 918.8 thousand (32.9 per cent) – in rural areas. Compared to the beginning of 2018, the urban resident population decreased by 0.5 per cent (9.3 thousand), the rural resident population – by 0.6 per cent (5.4 thousand).
At the beginning of 2019, the number of women in Lithuania was by 203 thousand higher than that of men (1 million 498.6 thousand and 1 million 295.6 thousand respectively). Women accounted for 53.6 per cent of the total resident population; there were 1 157 women per 1 000 men (at the beginning of 2018, 53.8 per cent and 1 165 respectively).
At the beginning of 2019, there were 552.4 thousand elderly people (aged 65 and older), or 19.8 per cent of the total resident population. Each seventh man and each fourth woman was aged 65 and older. Compared to the beginning of 2018, the number of elderly people increased by 0.6 thousand, or 0.1 per cent.
At the beginning of 2019, the number of children under 15 was 1.3 times lower than that of elderly people. There were 131 elderly persons per 100 children.
At the beginning of 2019, the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania accounted for 98.3 per cent of the country’s resident population, those of Ukraine – 0.5 per cent, Russia – 0.4 per cent, Belarus – 0.3 per cent (at the beginning of 2018, for 99, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.1 per cent respectively). Most residents of the country (2 million 656 thousand, or 95 per cent) were born in Lithuania, 138.2 thousand (5 per cent) – abroad.
At the beginning of 2019, 1 million 157.9 thousand (50.5 per cent) persons aged 18 and older were married, 10.5 per cent – divorced, each eleventh – widowed. The number of divorced women was 1.8 times, that of widowed women – 7 times higher than that of men.

Marriages and divorces
In 2018, the number of marriages registered amounted to19.7 thousand, that of divorces – 8.6 thousand, which is by 1.5 thousand marriages (6.9 per cent) less and 122 divorces (1.4 per cent) more than in 2017. The crude marriage rate (the number of marriages per 1 000 population) decreased from 7.5 in 2017 to 7 in 2018. The crude divorce rate (the number of divorces per 1 000 population) increased to 3.1 in 2018 (in 2017 – 3). If the previous years’ ratio does not change, it is probable that 39 out of 100 couples will get divorced. In 2018, the average age at first marriage for men was 30.3 years (in 2017, 30.2), for women – 28 years (in 2017, 27.8). In 2018, remarriages made up about one-fifth of marriages. In 2018, 6.6 thousand children under 18 were living in single-parent families after divorce (in 2017, 6.5 thousand).

Fertility
In 2018, 28.1 thousand live births were registered, which is by 0.5 thousand (1.9 per cent) less than in 2017. In 2018, the crude live birth rate (the number of live births per 1000 population) was 10 (in 2017, 10.1). In 2018, the total fertility rate stood at 1.63; compared to 2017, it remained unchanged. The most favourable demographic situation is observed when the total fertility rate stands at around 2.1. In 2018, the average age of women at the birth of the first child was 27.8 years (in 2017, 27.5 years). Almost half of live births (44.3 per cent) were first order births, 40 per cent – second, 15.6 per cent – third and higher order births. The number of births outside marriage amounted to 7.4 thousand, or 26.4 per cent of all live births (in 2017, 26.8 per cent).

Mortality
In 2018, 39.6 thousand deaths were registered. Against 2017, the number of deaths decreased by 568, or 1.4 per cent. In 2018, the crude death rate (the number of deaths per 1000 population) stood at 14.1 (in 2017, 14.2).
In 2018, life expectancy at birth for men was 70.9 years, for women – 80.6 years (in 2017, 70.7 years and 80.4 years respectively). The difference between life expectancy at birth for men and for women in 2018 was the same as in 2017 – 9.7 years.
In 2018, according to the data of the Health Information Centre of the Institute of Hygiene, the number of deaths due to diseases of the circulatory system totalled 21.9 thousand (55.4 per cent of all deaths), malignant neoplasms – 8 thousand (20.3 per cent), external causes of death – 2.6 thousand (6.6 per cent). In 2018, 683 persons died due to suicides, 451 – falls, 224 – transport accidents, 163 – exposure to excessive natural cold, 157 – accidental poisoning by and exposure to alcohol, 155 – drowning and submersion, 72 – assault.
In 2018, 96 infant deaths were registered, i.e. by 11 (12.9 per cent) more than in 2017. The infant mortality rate (the number of infant deaths per 1000 live births) increased from 2.9 in 2017 to 3.4 in 2018.

International migration
In 2018, 32.2 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania. Against 2017, the number of emigrants decreased by 15.7 thousand (1.5 times). In 2018, the crude emigration rate (the number of emigrants per 1 000 population) was on the decrease and stood at 11.5 (in 2017, at 16.9).
In 2018, 28.9 thousand people immigrated to Lithuania, which is by 8.5 thousand (1.4 times) more than in 2017. In 2018, the crude immigration rate stood at 10.3 (in 2017, 7.2).
In 2018, 16.6 thousand of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania returned to Lithuania, which is by 6.4 thousand more than in 2017. Last year, 12.3 thousand foreigners immigrated to the country (42.6 per cent of all immigrants), which is by 2.1 thousand (20.7 per cent) more than in 2017.
In 2018, net international migration decreased: the number of those who emigrated from Lithuania exceeded the number of those who immigrated by 3.3 thousand people (in 2017, 27.6 thousand).
Last year, 12.2 thousand (37.7 per cent) of all emigrants chose the United Kingdom as their destination of emigration, Germany was chosen by 3.2 thousand (9.8 per cent), Norway – 3 thousand (9.3 per cent), Ireland – 2 thousand (6.3 per cent).
In 2018, almost half (7.6 thousand, or 45.8 per cent) of all citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania came back from the United Kingdom, 1.9 thousand (11.3 per cent) – Norway, 1.2 thousand (7.4 per cent) – Ireland, 1.2 thousand (7.3 per cent) – Germany.
Almost half (5.7 thousand, or 46.5 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania in 2018 were the citizens of Ukraine, 3.3 thousand (26.4 per cent) – Belarus, 780 (6.3 per cent) – the Russian Federation. Over the year, the number of citizens of Ukraine who immigrated to Lithuania grew by 32.1, Belarus – 20, the Russian Federation – 18.9 per cent.

Internal migration
In 2018, 76.2 thousand country’s residents, or 2.7 per cent of the resident population, changed their permanent place of residence within the country. Against 2017, the number of internal migrants increased by 6.8 thousand (9.7 per cent).
The crude arrival/departure rates (the number of arrivals/departures per 1 000 population) increased from 24.5 in 2017 to 27.2 in 2018.
Last year, 42.9 thousand (56.4 per cent) of the country's residents changed their usual place of residence to urban areas and 33.3 thousand (43.6 per cent) – to rural areas (in 2017, 36.6 thousand, or 55.7 per cent and 30.8 thousand, or 44.3 per cent respectively).
