The chapter presents data on the length of roads and the number of vehicles registered in the country, traffic by different modes of transport and road traffic accidents. The chapter contains data on the arrivals and departures of passengers, loading and unloading of goods in the seaports and at airports. Seaport data include carriage by sea vessels by Lithuanian and foreign carriers. Loading works carried out within the territory of Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal are estimated. Data on airports cover information on the flows of passengers, freight and mail at all country airports. Transportation carried out by Lithuanian and foreign airlines is included. Data on the carriage by Lithuanian airlines are shown separately. Data on road motor vehicles from the Register of Road Motor Vehicles.
In 2018, transport of goods by all modes of transport (including transportation by oil pipelines) amounted to 165.2 million tonnes, which is by 43.4 per cent more than in 2010 and by 10.3 per cent more than in 2017. In 2010–2018, an average annual increase of 4.6 per cent was observed. In 2018, compared to 2017, freight carriage by road transport increased by 15.8, by inland waterway – 9.4, by rail transport – 7.9 per cent. Meanwhile, freight carriage by air transport dropped by 16.8, transportation by oil pipeline – 6.7, and carriage by sea – 1.6 per cent.
In 2018, compared to 2017, international freight transport increased by 11.5 per cent. An increase was observed in international freight transport by road (18.9 per cent), and by rail (12.3 per cent), a decrease – international freight transport by air (16.8 per cent), oil pipelines (6.7per cent), and by sea (1.6 per cent).
In 2018, compared to 2017, national freight transport increased by 8.2 per cent. In national freight transport, road transport remained predominant and accounted for 72.7 per cent of total national transport.
In 2018, 56.2 million tonnes of goods were handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal, which is by 39.5 per cent more than in 2010 and by 6.2 per cent more than in 2017. In 2010–2018, an average annual increase of 4.2 per cent was observed.
In 2018, crude petroleum and petroleum products accounted for 31.4 per cent (17.7 million tonnes) of all goods handled. Compared to 2017, their amount decreased by 6.4 per cent. Natural and chemical fertilisers handled accounted for 25.3 per cent (14.2 million tonnes) of all goods handled; compared to 2017, their volume increased by 3.6 per cent. Goods in containers, goods road vehicles and wagons handled accounted for 17.9 per cent (10.1 million tonnes) of all goods handled; compared to 2017, their volume increased by 32.9 per cent.
In 2018, freight and mail loaded and unloaded at Lithuanian airports amounted to 16.8 thousand tonnes, which is by 40.9 per cent more than in 2010 and by 11.4 per cent more than in 2017.
In 2018, the number of passengers carried by all modes of transport amounted to 380.2 million, which is by 2 per cent less than in 2010 and by 1.5 per cent less than in 2017. In 2010–2018, an average annual decrease of 0.2 per cent was observed. In 2018, compared to 2017, passenger transport by inland waterways grew by 17.2, by rail – 11, by air – 2.9 per cent. Meanwhile, a decrease was observed in passenger transport by sea and by road – 11.5 and 1.7 per cent respectively.
In 2018, national passenger transport by road dominated: it accounted for 98.2 per cent of total national passenger transport. Passenger transport by rail accounted for 1.1 per cent, by other modes of transport – for less than 1 per cent.
International passenger transport by road made up 39.1, by rail – 26.3, by air – 25.3, by sea – 9.3 per cent of total international passenger transport.
In 2018, the total number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the country’s airports amounted to 6.3 million, which is 2.7 times more than in 2010 and by 19.2 per cent more than in 2017. In 2010–2018, an average annual increase of 13.4 per cent was observed.
The majority of passengers arrived from and departed to the United Kingdom (18.6 per cent), Germany (8.5 per cent), Norway (6.8 per cent), Turkey (6.2 per cent), Italy (5.9 per cent), Denmark (5.5 per cent), and Poland (5 per cent). In 2018, compared to 2017, more passengers arrived from and departed to Turkey – by 43.4, Norway – by 18.5, Italy – by 13.9, United Kingdom – by 13.5, and Germany – by 10.4 per cent.
In 2018, 2 926 road traffic accidents took place. The total number of persons killed amounted to 173 (by 9.4 per cent less than in 2017), that of persons injured – 3 390 (by 4.8 per cent less than in 2017). In 2018, compared to 2017, the number of persons killed in road traffic accidents through the fault of persons under the influence of alcohol increased by 37 per cent, the number of persons injured in such accidents decreased by 5.8 per cent.
